Favorites vs underdogs
4 min read
The stat
A favorite is priced as more likely — not unbeatable.
What it means
A favorite is the side people (or a market) treat as more likely to win. An underdog is the other side.
Why it matters
More likely is not the same as certain. A 70% favorite is still expected to lose about 3 times in 10 in the long run.
Watch out
Picking who you like is fine as a fan. Calling that a lock because the record looks nicer is a different, weaker habit.
A 12–2 team can still lose to a 7–7 team. Records are one clue, not a law.
